Building the PRISM community

The ultimate goal of this project is to 'create a coherent pan-European community of practice out of the fragmented academic and other interest groups currently working on issues relating to business intangibles'.

Throughout the lifetime of the project, the PRISM group is seeking to build a collaborative community of experts interested in addressing some of the issues surrounding the management and measurement of intangibles in the modern economy. PRISM is looking to build bridges to groups and individuals active in the field and with additive and complementary knowledge to offer.

PRISM has open links to the following projects and groups:

  • E*Know-Net - This EC-funded network aims to exploit and make more visible the results obtained in its forerunner, the MERITUM project - Measuring Intangibles to Understand and Improve Innovation Management (1998-2001).
  • Nordika and FRAME – An ongoing project into Intellectual Capital and its influence on financial performance.
  • PwC's ValueReporting Initiative
  • Center for Information Policy – Part of the University of Maryland, the center analyzes information policy choices in terms of changing technologies, business practices, ethics, and human behavior
  • FASB - The Financial Accounting Standards Board has for some time been evaluating possible action about intangible assets and other inadequately reported aspects of the "new economy".
  • IASB – The International Accounting Standards Board is also continually looking at its standards on all areas, including intangible assets. In 1999 it issued IAS 38 on “Intangible Assets”.
  • The Danish Agency for Trade and Industry Guideline for Intellectual Capital Statements – The guideline was prepared on the basis of the experience of 17 Danish companies who each prepared Intellectual Capital statements for two years.
  • The Intangibles Research Project (Ross Institute of Accounting Research, Stern School of New York) - The Intangible Research Center was established to assist researchers in obtaining access to internal data on corporate intangible investments, and to link researchers with executives in charge of R&D, brand management and human capital development, for the purposes of interviews, discussions and exchange of information
  • OECD – The OECD has long been active in looking at some of the measurement issues concerning today’s economy and the attendant policy challenges presented.
  • The European Knowledge Management Forum - The European KM Forum aims to build up a KM community in Europe and to support and identify commonality in KM terminology. application and implementation.
  • Make Sparks Fly is a new online community for people who believe in the need for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) reform. It is a discussion forum dedicated to increasing awareness and promoting evolution of the current system across the UK and Europe through widespread dialogue.
